Ranger Men, Women Defeated at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. –
After playing five straight at home, the Drew University men's and women's tennis teams began a four-match road trip against Scranton at the Royal Courts on Wednesday.  In the women's match, the Royals (14-3, 5-0 Landmark) notched a 6-3 victory over the Rangers (7-5, 1-3 Landmark).  Drew's men (12-3, 2-2 Landmark), meanwhile, fell to Scranton (9-3, 4-1 Landmark) by a 7-2 count.
 
In the men's match, Vineet Vemulapally (Boca Raton, Fla.) was responsible for both Drew victories.  He defeated Tarquin McGurrin by a score of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Geoffrey Diehl (West Hartford, Conn.) for an 8-5 win over Tarquin and Kennedy McGurin at No. 1 doubles.
 
Scranton, however, won each of the remaining matchups.  At No. 2 doubles, Alexander Ochalski and Brian Harkins beat Will Morrison (San Diego, Calif.) and Bryce Kennedy (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) 8-2.  In the No. 3 doubles match, Drew's tandem of Bryce Weizer (Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Karel Raska (Morristown, N.J.) suffered an 8-1 defeat against Christian Aksu and Charles Swope.
 
At No. 2 singles, Keller McGurrin beat Diehl by a 6-4, 6-3 count.  Ochalski topped Kennedy 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Swope defeated Raska 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 position.  Lloyd Goldstein (New Providence, N.J.) fell to Harkins by a score of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, while Weizer, Drew's No. 6, suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss against Connor Lemieux.
 
Drew's No. 1 women's doubles team of Ashley Camel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Ty Ty Witten (New Haven, Conn.) earned a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Julia Frattaroli and Nastashia DeNunzio.  The Rangers also got singles wins from Christina Christodoulou (Branchburg, N.J.) and Kathryn Swenor (Basking Ridge, N.J.).  At No. 4 singles, Christodoulou went to a third set tiebreak before defeating Tatiana Klacko, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.  Swenor, meanwhile, notched a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Kristen Denniston at No. 6 singles.
 
The first-place Royals claimed victory in the other six matches, though, to remain undefeated in Landmark play.  At No. 1 singles, Frattaroli topped Camel by a 6-3, 6-1 count, and DeNunzio knocked off Maria Navas Espinal (Valle, Colombia) 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 position.  Emilia Jakubek beat Witten 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, while Lindsay Roberto registered a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Cristina Riccio (New Providence, N.J.) in the No. 5 spot. 
 
Meanwhile, in doubles, Scranton's No. 2 team of Jakubek and Klacko knocked off Navas Espinal and Xylia Bruff (South Plainfield, N.J.) by an 8-3 count.  At No. 3 doubles, Riccio and Christodoulou fell 8-2 against Elyse Smilnak and Emily Kelly.
 
On Saturday, the Rangers resume their Landmark Conference slate by visiting Susquehanna at 1 p.m.
