Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Drew’s Winning Streak Snapped By Montclair State

MADISON, N.J. – On Tuesday night, the Drew University men's lacrosse team wrapped up non-conference play with a matchup against Montclair State at Ranger Stadium.  The Rangers (3-7) scored 10 goals for the third straight game, but saw their two-game winning streak came to an end, as the Red Hawks (4-3) notched a 14-10 victory.

The contest was originally scheduled for March 10, but was postponed due to snow and field conditions.  The weather on Tuesday night wasn't much better, as the game was played through a steady rain with temperatures in the low-40s.

After Kyle MacDonnell (Niantic, Conn.) put Drew on the board first, Montclair State scored a pair to go in front.  Jonny Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.) found the back of the net at the 4:37 mark to tie it at 2-2, but the Red Hawks got a late tally from Matt Hammerle to take a 4-3 lead into the second quarter.  Montclair State then notched the first three goals of the second period to open up a 7-3 advantage.  The Rangers responded with three of the next four to pull within two, 8-6, before Montclair State got a goal from Dan Bellezza with 15 seconds left in the half to make it a 9-6 margin at the break.

Seamus O'Connor (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored the only goal of the third quarter to trim Drew's deficit to 9-7.  Montclair State found the back of the net five times in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, though, to make it a 14-8 game.  MacDonnell responded with a pair of tallies halfway through the period, but that would prove to the final score, as the River Hawks held on for a 14-10 win.

MacDonnell had four goals and an assist for the Rangers.  Kevin Goettlich (Florham Park, N.J.) contributed two goals, two assists and four ground balls, while Greg Swenson (East Lyme, Conn.) distributed a pair of assists to go along with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Joe Palmieri (Guilford, Conn.), meanwhile, collected four ground balls.  Nate Sanders (Annapolis, Md.) (3-7) got the start in goal and took the loss.  He made five saves before giving way to Mike McGeeney (Annapolis, Md.), who recorded four saves in the second half.

For the Red Hawks, Brady Wulster led the way with four goals.  Bellezza tallied three goals, three assists and six ground balls, while Hammerle finished with three goals and two assists.  Aaron Loschiavo and Matt Axmann each picked up five ground balls, as Montclair State held a 36-26 edge in that category.  Goalkeeper Jack Cardew (3-3) stopped six first-half shots, and Matthew McLaren posted eight saves in the second half.

Drew (0-1 Landmark) concludes a three-game homestand on Saturday, when Elizabethtown (4-5, 1-1 Landmark) visits Ranger Stadium for a 1 p.m. showdown.
