MADISON, N.J. – Junior
Aidan Cserhat scored on a header in the 99th minute and the Drew University men's soccer team held on for a wild 4-3 overtime victory over previously-undefeated College of New Jersey Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium. Drew (6-2) led 3-1 with 14 minutes left, only to see the Lions (7-1) rally late to force OT. The Rangers survived a hat trick from TCNJ's Ryan Vazquez.
How it Happened: The Rangers were awarded a corner kick from the right side with just over a minute left in overtime. Senior
Anthony McMyne sent a perfectly-placed ball to Cserhat, who directed a well-placed low shot just inside the far post for his first career golden goal. It was also Drew's second overtime victory in three matches; the Rangers kicked off their current three-game winning streak with a double-OT win at Muhlenberg a week ago.
Early Offense: The Lions took the early lead with a 21st-minute goal, but the Rangers quickly responded with three goals over a 7:18 span. Sophomore
Nate Race kicked off the run in the 22nd minute with a spectacular goal, volleying home a beautiful curling cross from McMyne. Junior
Andy Imoh then struck in the 25th minute, when he rifled in his own cross that was deflected back to him by a defender. Junior
Matt Asante completed the spurt, rebounding in his own shot after it had been saved by the keeper.
Second Half: Neither side scored again until Vazquez struck for his final two goals over an 11-minute stretch, tying the game with 3:01 left in regulation. Imoh missed wide on a potential game-winning shot with just under two minutes left, and neither side took another shot the rest of the way.
Overtime: Drew appeared to have won the match early in the extra session, but a goal was called off due to an offside call. The Rangers attempted a pair of shots on goal before Cserhat's game-winner – his team-leading seventh goal of the year.
Between the Pipes: Junior
Jason Adamo finished with a pair of saves to earn his sixth victory of the season for Drew. Michael Kayal made five saves for TCNJ.
Stats Sheet: Drew finished with a 22-10 advantage in shots and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. The Rangers were called for two more fouls (15-13) than TCNJ.
Next Up: Drew opens Landmark Conference play on Saturday, when it visits Goucher College at 1 p.m.
