MADISON, N.J. - With the match tied 1-1 at halftime, Elizabethtown College scored a pair of second-half goals to pull away for a 3-1 victory over the Drew University women's soccer team in a Landmark Conference tilt Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
Lydia Lawson scored all three goals to post a hat trick for the Blue Jays (7-3-1, 2-1 LC).
At halftime of the game,
Christa Racine was honored for her 25th anniversary as head coach of the Rangers. She was joined by members of her first team from the 1994 season.
The Rangers (5-7, 1-2 LC) kept Elizabethtown off the scoreboard early on, thanks in part to a pair of tremendous saves from freshman
Angela Accetturo late in the half. She made a leaping deflection on a blast from Lawson, and the ball caromed off the crossbar and rested dangerously near the right post until Accetturo covered it up. Lawson fired off another well-struck ball two minutes later, but Accetturo fell to the turf for another save. However, the Blue Jays broke through in the 37th minute, when Lawson headed in a shot on a breakaway.
Drew received a penalty kick in the 39th minute following an E-town hand ball in the box. Senior
Sydney Ziemba made it count, booting it into the right side the net for her third goal of the season. The two sides went to halftime tied 1-1, with Drew holding a slight 8-7 shot advantage.
The Rangers continued to create chances in the second half, when they outshot the Blue Jays 6-3. Drew nearly took the lead just two minutes into the period, when a high, hard-hit ball from junior
Leah Dentale was saved. The Blue Jays then took the lead for good when Lawson buried her second goal of the game in the 68h minute.
Lawson completed her big day in the final minute, when she intercepted a clear and snaked a shot inside the far post.
Drew outshot Elizabethtown 12-8, but Trinity Soto made four saves for the Blue Jays. Accetturo was credited with three stops.
The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they host the University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference affair starting at 7 p.m.
