MADISON, N.J. - Elizabethtown College scored a goal just 13 seconds into the game, and it proved to be enough as the Blue Jays handed the Rangers a 2-0 setback in Landmark Conference (LC) men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at a sunny Ranger Stadium.
At halftime of the game, Ranger Head Coach
Lenny Armuth was honored for his 25th anniversary at Drew. He was joined by members of his first team from the 1994 season.
The Blue Jays (8-3-1, 3-0 LC), ranked ninth in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Division III Mid-Atlantic Region poll, received six saves from Kelvin Del Cid. Senior
Jason Adamo collected five stops for the Rangers (4-6-2, 0-2-1 LC).
E-town scored its early goal when defender Eli Perry sent a long pass from beyond midfield to Garrett Winchilla, who quickly dribbled into the box and drilled in a shot from the right post. The Jays added to their lead with an own goal in the 12th minute.
The Rangers had several good looks at the net in the opening half, first on a close shot from junior
Nate Race in the 19th minute and later a quick header from senior
Ian Sawicki in the 27th minute. Junior
Cole Bosch also placed a well-struck ball on frame that Del Cid dove to stop.
Adamo made four of his saves in the opening half, when the Rangers held an 8-7 shot advantage.
The Rangers continued to produce shots in the second half, outshooting the Blue Jays 7-2. The team's best look came in the 75th minute, when Del Cid made a leaping, one-handed deflection on a header from senior
Aidan Cserhat that appeared to be headed for the net.
Drew picks up its schedule on Tuesday, when it hosts Haverford College at 7 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
