MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's swimming & diving team posted one of its biggest victories in recent memory, defeating three-time defending Landmark Conference champion Catholic University 172-127 Saturday afternoon in F.M. Kirby Pool.
Freshman
Magnus Loeffler broke his second school record in as many meets to open his career as the Rangers earned their first-ever victory over the Cardinals.
Drew won 12 of 16 events, including a sweep from Loeffler in the diving events. He won the 3-meter diving (six dives) with a score of 220.28 to surpass the former Drew record of 195.65 held by teammate
Angelo Angione. Loeffler also just missed his own school record in the 1-meter diving, posting a score of 290.85 after opening his career with a school record of 291.20 back on Oct. 11.
Senior
Michael Ma was a triple-winner for the Rangers, capturing the 100-breaststroke (1:02.00), the 200-backstroke (2:03.70), and the 200-IM (2:01.33). Junior
Alexandre Sannibale added a pair of victories, winning the 200-butterfly (2:02.28) and the 500-freestyle (5:00.00).
Four additional Rangers picked up an individual win: freshman
Jeffrey Crouse in the 200-freestyle (1:48.97), junior
Matheus Macena in the 100-backstroke (54.12), senior
Jack Mahoney in the 100-freestyle (49.08), and freshman
Harrison Neal in the 200-breaststroke (2:18.29).
Drew posted a 1-2 sweep in three events, capped by runner-up finishes from sophomore
Josh Roberts (200-freestyle, 1:49.22), Angione (1-meter diving, 192.83), and Neal (200-IM, 2:03.36). Also placing second were Neal in the 1,000-freestyle (10:32.03), sophomore
Jake Zajdzinski in the 50-freestyle (22.34), and Macena in the 100-butterfly (54.67).
Macena, Neal, Ma, and Zajdzinski also teamed up for a victory in the 200-medley relay (1:38.72).
The Rangers continue their season next Saturday, visiting Ramapo College at 2 p.m.
