MADISON, N.J. - Scranton scored once in the first half, then added a pair of second-half insurance tallies and the visiting Royals handed the Drew University women's soccer team a 3-0 Landmark Conference (LC) setback at a rain-soaked Ranger Stadium Tuesday evening.
With two conference games remaining, Drew (6-8, 2-3 LC) now finds itself in fifth place in the Landmark standings with six points, trailing Elizabethtown College by three points.
Freshman
Angela Accetturo made six saves for the Rangers while Amanda Steinberg stopped two shots to earn the shutout for Scranton (7-4-3, 4-1 LC).
Junior
Sarah Racine took a quick shot on net just minutes into the game, but it was caught by Steinberg. Accetturo dropped to the ground for a save nine minutes into the period to keep the Royals off the scoreboard early.
The Royals broke through on their fourth shot of the game. In the 17th minute, Grace Elliott took a throw-in from the left side, dribbled around a defender, and launched a deep shot that sailed over the keeper's head for all the scoring the visitors would need.
Scranton held a slight 4-2 shot advantage in the opening half and led 1-0 at the intermission.
The Royals quickly padded their lead early in the second period, striking twice in just under two minutes. Rebecca Russo scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute, and Mazie Stiles followed up in the 51st minute on a breakaway, finishing off a feed from Elliott.
Scranton continued to pressure the Ranger goal the rest of the way, out-shooting the hosts 10-1, but Accetturo turned aside four shots over the final 38 minutes.
The Rangers return home on Saturday, when they host Landmark Conference foe Juniata College at 4 p.m. on Senior Day.
