Men’s Lacrosse Edged Late by Catholic

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's lacrosse team carried a lead into the fourth quarter versus Landmark Conference (LC) frontrunner Catholic University, but the Cardinals outscored the Rangers 3-0 in the final period to capture an 8-6 decision Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
 
Highlights
• After falling behind 4-1, the Rangers caught fire, outscoring Catholic 5-0 over a 15-minute stretch spanning the middle two quarters. Sophomore Miles Savage sparked the rally, winning a face-off before racing in to score his first collegiate goal with 9:16 left in the opening half.
• Drew struck for two more tallies to forge a 4-4 tie at the intermission. Junior Seamus O'Connor buried a man-up tally before classmate Kyle MacDonnell struck with just five seconds on the clock.
• O'Connor converted another man-up goal just four minutes into the third quarter before junior Kevin Goettlich got into the act, scoring with 8:04 left in the period. However, it would turn out to be the team's final goal of the day.
• The Cardinals (7-5, 3-0 LC) pulled to within 6-5 with 6:33 to go in the third quarter, then scored two goals 1:13 apart to go up 7-6 with 8:02 remaining in the game. Catholic ended up outshooting the Rangers 8-3 in the quarter and tacked on an insurance goal with 2:10 left.
 
Top Performers
• Junior Nate Sanders made 13 saves for the Rangers.
• O'Connor scored a pair of goals while Goettlich finished with one goal and two assists.
• Sophomore defenseman Jonny Bronander posted a five ground balls and one caused turnover while freshman Jack Tynan registered two grounders and two CTs.
 
Stat Sheet
Catholic posted advantages in shots (36-29) and face-offs (11-6) while each side scooped 28 ground balls. Drew's man-down unit held the Cardinals to one goal on five extra-man opportunities.
 
Next Up
The Rangers (1-11, 0-2 LC) return to action on Wednesday, when they visit the University of Scranton at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
