MADISON, N.J. - SUNY New Paltz scored on a header in the 24th minute the goal proved to be enough as the Hawks edged the Rangers 1-0 in the championship game of the 36th annual Drew Fall Festival Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
The Rangers (1-1) doubled the Hawks on shots (16-8) but were unable to dent goalie Marc DePasquale, who finished with seven saves.
Drew fired off seven shots over the opening 22 minutes, with four coming from senior
Aidan Cserhat, but DePasquale made three of his stops during the stretch, including several from point-blank range. New Paltz then broke through when defender Kevin Dole headed in Kevin Doorley.
The Rangers finished with a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half and a 7-4 surplus in the second stanza. But DePasquale turned aside four shots in the first half and three over the final 45 minutes.
Senior
Jason Adamo made all three of his saves during the second half for Drew, which also doubled the Hawks in corner kicks (6-3).
Dole was named the tournament's Defensive MVP while New Paltz's James Maltes was named Offensive MVP after scoring the only goal in the Hawks' 1-0 win over Stockton University on Friday.
The Rangers continue their season next Saturday and Sunday at the Rutgers-Newark Invitational. Drew plays NYU on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Pfeiffer College on Sunday at noon.
