MADISON, N.J. - Senior
Aidan Cserhat scored two goals and reached the 100-point plateau for his career as Drew University men's soccer team erased a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 tie with Goucher College in its Landmark Conference (LC) opener Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
Cserhat reached his milestone on his second goal, giving him 101 career points. He becomes just the seventh player in school history to reach the milestone and the first since
Derek Swanner C'05 in 2005. It took Cserhat less than three years to achieve the feat, hitting the century mark in just his 52nd game at Drew after coming to the Forest as a transfer in 2017.
The tie was the first for the Rangers (4-4-1, 0-0-1 LC) in over two years, as the team's last draw was a 0-0 verdict against Elmhurst on Sept. 9, 2017.
Drew outshot Goucher 25-10, but Joe May made 11 saves for the Gophers (1-7-1, 0-0-1 LC).
Senior goalkeeper
Jason Adamo made three saves over the opening 53 minutes for the Rangers before junior
Jake Marlowe stopped two shots without allowing a goal over the final 57 minutes.
Drew outshot the Gophers 7-4 in the opening period, and Adamo smothered a dangerous shot in the 31st minute. With Goucher on a breakaway, Zach LaFaver drilled a low liner from the top of the 18, but Adamo went to the ground for a clean save.
The Gophers broke through on their fourth and final shot of the period. After a Drew yellow card, the visitors received a free kick from the left corner, and Brandon Cohen found Zach Brumbalow in front of the net. Goucher carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, Goucher took the first three shots of the period, but Adamo made a pair of stops, including a tremendous diving save on a header from point-blank range. But the Gophers were awarded a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, and LaFaver drilled it into the left side of the net to make it 2-0.
The Rangers nearly answered less than a minute later, but May made a pair of tremendous stops, first on a header from senior
Ian Sawicki and later on a rocket of a shot from senior
Tyler Kwaak. But in the 59th minute, the Gophers committed a foul in the box, leading to a penalty kick that Cserhat booted in to slice Goucher's lead in half.
Junior
Nate Race nearly tied it moments later on a breakaway, but May came out to meet him at the top of box and snuffed out a shot.
Cserhat struck again with 22 minutes left, tying the game on a free kick from 25 yards out. He buried the shot low inside the right post to reach the 100-point mark.
Senior
Matt Asante put a shot on goal in the 71st minute, but May kicked it aside. The Rangers outshot Goucher 13-5 in the second half and it was a 2-2 game at the end of regulation.
Early in the first overtime, sophomore defender
Vaughn Paga rifled a deep shot following a corner kick, but it sailed just high of the frame. Freshman
Modesto Nogueira and junior
Cole Bosch each attempted a shot on goal in the extra session with headers for Drew, but both were saved.
Marlowe made a big stop less than a minute into the second OT, diving to his right on a shot from outside the 18. At the other end, Sawicki nearly notched his second-straight golden goal, but his header off a free kick in the 104th minute was saved.
The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, when they visit DeSales University at 4 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
