MADISON, N.J. - Junior
Sarah Racine posted two goals and two assists, leading the Drew University women's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Manhattanville College in a non-conference tilt and the Rangers' home opener Wednesday afternoon at a hot and humid Ranger Stadium.
The win was never in question for the Rangers (1-1), who scored three times over the opening 16 minutes.
Senior
Alexa Simon put the Rangers on top in the fifth minute, taking a cross from Racine and tapping the ball around the goalie near the top of the box. Just over two minutes later, Racine took a long pass from freshman
Sam Kievit and rifled in a shot over the keeper's head, giving the hosts a quick 2-0 advantage.
In the 16th minute, freshman
Gabby Gilgorri completed Drew's early scoring spree, taking a pass from junior
Marissa McGaffney deep in the right win and blasting a shot that deflected off the goalie's fingertips and into the net.
Manhattanville (0-2) scored in the 36th minute to make it a 3-1 game at the half. But the Rangers restored their three-goal cushion when Racine struck again, scoring off a failed clear in the 54th minute.
Drew tacked on two more goals in the final 20 minutes. Kievit punched in a corner kick from Racine in the 71st minute for her first collegiate goal before freshman
Sanne Bloemendaal set the final score when she converted a pass from sophomore
Nichole Adams six minutes later.
Freshmen
Anthi Panayides and
Angela Accetturo split the time in goal for the Rangers. Panayides made three saves in the opening half while Accetturo stopped two shots in the second period.
Drew outshot the Valiants 24-10.
Drew returns home this weekend when it hosts the Drew Fall Festival. The Rangers take on 14th-ranked Swarthmore College on Saturday at 1 p.m. before facing Bard College on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
