No. 14 Swarthmore Edges Women's Soccer

MADISON, N.J. - Swarthmore College scored a goal late in the first half and it proved to be the difference, as the 14th-ranked Garnet edged the Rangers 1-0 on the first day of the Drew Fall Fest Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers (1-2) played shutout soccer for the opening 35 minutes versus a Swarthmore team that reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament last season. Drew had an excellent look at the goal in the 19th minute, when junior Sarah Racine crossed a ball inside to senior Alexa Simon, who was unmarked. But Simon's shot was hauled in by keeper Chantal Reyes.

Swarthmore (2-1) broke through in the 36th minute, when Maddy Carens collected a rebound from the outside the box, dribbled to her left, and fired a shot just inside the right post.

After outshooting the Rangers 9-3 in the opening period, the Garnet turned up the pressure in the second half, when it held a 13-5 shot advantage. However, freshman Angela Accetturo, who entered the game in the second half, saved all seven shots on goal in the period.

One of Drew's best chances at a goal in the second half came in the 73rd minute, when junior Leah Dentale rolled a perfect cross to an open Emma Shatel in the middle of the box. Shatel rifled a shot at the goal, but it sailed high. Dentale also had a good look in the 80th minute with the Rangers in transition before Simon unloaded another shot six minutes later, but both attempts missed high. Dentale attempted Drew's final shot, just missing the left post with a minute to go.

Freshman Anthi Panayides played the opening half in goal for Drew and made one save. Reyes stopped two shots for the Garnet.

The Rangers conclude Fall Festival play on Sunday, when they host Bard College at 2:30 p.m.
