Men's Lax Captures Season Opener as Goettlich Scores 100th Point

READING, Pa. - Senior Kevin Goettlich scored his 100th career point and the Drew University men's lacrosse team captured its season opener with an 11-8 non-conference victory at Albright College Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers led just 5-4 at halftime, but used a 3-0 run to go up 9-5 early in the fourth quarter. Albright was unable to get closer than two the rest of the way.

Goettlich reached his milestone with his second assist of the game. It came with two seconds left in the first quarter, giving his team a 4-2 lead.

Freshman Craig Wilkie enjoyed an impressive collegiate debut for Drew, posting three goals and one assist to go with six ground balls. Senior Kyle MacDonnell added three goals, freshman Zack Zachmann tallied two goals and one assist, and Goettlich contributed one goal and two assists.

Defensively, senior Nate Sanders registered 14 saves while junior defenseman Jonny Bronander posted five ground balls. At the X, sophomore Paul Le Pera won 12-of-22 face-offs and also scooped five ground balls.

Cole Genneken scored three goals to lead the Lions, who were also playing their season opener.

Albright scored the game's first two goals, but the Rangers responded with a 5-0 run that overlapped the opening two quarters. MacDonnell and Wilkie scored two goals apiece during the stretch. But the Lions scored the final two tallies of the period to make it a one-goal game at the break.

The two sides traded goals to start the third quarter, and it was a 6-5 game with 7:57 left in the third quarter. But that's when Drew put together its decisive run, as MacDonnell, Wilkie, and Goettlich all found the back of the net to give the Rangers their four-goal lead with 12:50 remaining in the game.

The Lions answered with a 3-1 run, pulling to within 10-8 with 3:05 left. But Drew blanked Albright the rest of the way and Zachman added an insurance tally with 1:37 left.

Drew continues its season next Saturday when it hosts Neumann at 1 p.m. in its home opener.
