MacDonnell Scores Six in Loss to Neumann

MADISON, N.J. - Senior Kyle MacDonnell scored a career-high six goals, but the Drew University men's lacrosse team fell by a score of 15-10 to Neumann University in its home opener Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers (1-1) trailed just 10-9 early in the fourth quarter before King's (3-0) ended the game on a 5-1 run.

Freshman Craig Wilkie added two goals and an assist for the Rangers while freshman Zack Zachmann posted two assists and seven ground balls. Senior Jack Fatone also notched two helpers.

Senior Nate Sanders finished with 13 saves for Drew.

The Knights never trailed after scoring the game's first goal. After Wilkie struck with 12:37 on the clock, Neumann scored the following two goals to assume a 3-1 lead, and it would not trail the rest of the day.

MacDonnell scored his first two goals in the final six minutes of the period and the Rangers trailed just 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Knights scored the first four goals of the second stanza, but MacDonnell answered with back-to-back tallies to bring Drew back into it at 8-5. MacDonnell cashed in for his fifth goal of the day with 2:20 on the clock, and the Rangers trailed just 9-6 at the break.

Drew came out strong to start the second half, outscoring Neumann 3-1 over the opening 16 minutes to draw to within one. Wilkie and MacDonnell each scored in the third quarter before freshman Tommy Larmore struck with 14:17 left to pull the Ranges to within 10-9.

The Knights answered with the next three goals before junior Miles Savage found paydirt with 5:11 left. But Neumann added two insurance goals over the last three minutes.

The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they visit Maritime at 7 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
