MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's basketball team clinched the No. 2 seed in the Landmark Conference (LC) Championship Tournament with a 78-70 conference victory over Catholic University on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
The Rangers (20-5, 11-3 LC) have now posted their second-straight 20-win season and will host the University of Scranton on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Landmark semifinals.
Senior guard
Riley Collins scored a game-high 25 points, perhaps none bigger than a 3-pointer with 1:18 left that made it a seven-point game and brought a packed crowd to its feet.
Junior forward
Lybrant Robinson added 17 points for Drew while senior guard
Michael Boice and sophomore guard
David Gervase scored 10 points apiece. Freshman forward
Howard McBurnie contributed 11 rebounds.
Riley Hayes led Catholic (8-17, 4-10 LC) with 22 points and 15 rebounds while Thomas Heurter posted 13 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.
Prior to the game, Drew's four seniors were honored in a ceremony that was capped by a lengthy standing ovation for
Brian Oehme, who overcame a bout with cancer early in his collegiate career.
The Rangers raced out to a 19-10 lead, only to see the Cardinals answer with eight in a row to draw to within one with 6:59 left in the first half. But Drew ended the period on an 11-0 run and carried a 33-21 lead into the locker room.
The second half became a battle of attrition, as the two sides were whistled for a combined 37 fouls over the final 20 minutes. Catholic rallied to cut the lead to one with 12:52 left, but the Rangers used a 10-0 run to push the lead back to 12 (57-45) with 9:18 remaining.
The Cardinals would not go quietly, however, and came all the way back to tie the game twice around the three-minute mark. But that's when the Rangers put together a clutch 7-0 spurt, started by a tie-breaking jumper from Collins followed by a pair of free throws from Gervase. Collins capped the surge with his big 3-pointer, and Drew would salt its victory at the foul line the rest of the way, going 8-for-12 in the final 1:04.
