HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Rangers scored the fifth-most goals in team history while senior
Kyle MacDonnell notched
his 100th career point as Drew downed host Centenary University 20-3 in non-conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon.
Drew (2-2) raced out to a 7-3 halftime lead and won going away, outscoring the Cyclones 13-0 in the second half.
The Rangers posted their highest offensive output since a 24-8 win over Moravian College on March 26, 2008.
Senior
Nicholas Polacek led Drew with five goals and two assists while freshman
Craig Wilkie notched five goals and one helper. Senior
Kevin Goettlich also scored five times while MacDonnell racked up two goals and four assists. He reached the century mark with his final point of the game - an assist with 3:01 left in the third quarter.
Sophomore
Paul Le Pera posted a tremendous showing at the X, winning 23 of 26 face-offs while picking up 14 ground balls.
In goal, junior
Michael McGeeney played the first three quarters and made two saves while yielding three goals. Sophomore
PJ Hoffman played the final period and stopped one shot.
Drew never trailed after outscoring Centenary 4-1 in the first quarter, when Goettlich scored a pair of goals. Polacek scored the last goal of the opening quarter and the first goal of the second period before freshman
Zack Zachmann converted to make it a 6-1 game.
Centenary (0-4) scored the next two goals to pull to within three, but MacDonnell struck with 3:19 left to give the Rangers their four-goal halftime lead and kick off a game-ending 14-0 run.
MacDonnell sparked Drew's big second half when he cashed in for a man-up goal two and a half minutes in. Wilkie followed up with back-to-back tallies as the Rangers' lead swelled to 10-3 with 10 minutes still remaining in the quarter. Wilkie would score again while Goettlich and Polacek scored twice apiece as Drew racked up eight third-quarter goals to assume a 15-3 lead heading into the final quarter. Wilkie tacked on two more goals in the final period.
The Rangers continue their season on Saturday, when they visit Rosemont College in another non-conference tilt starting at 1 p.m.
