HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Drew University women's volleyball team put forth a valiant effort in its first-ever Landmark Conference (LC) matches while taking on a pair of highly-regarded opponents on Saturday at Juniata College.
In their first match of the day, the Rangers (12-4, 0-2 LC) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth and deciding set before ultimately dropping a 3-2 decision to Susquehanna University (11-4, 2-0 LC), a team received votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III national poll.
Later in the evening, Drew took on Juniata (13-1, 2-0 LC) - ranked 12th in Division III by the AVCA - and lost a 3-0 decision.
Against Susquehanna, freshman
Andrea Camach-Tenreiro posted a monster double-double with season-highs of 27 kills and 24 digs, marking the first 20-20 performance in team history. Freshman
Ashley Carkhuff registered 18 kills, 16 digs, and three blocks while classmate
Jasmine Butler passed out 46 assists and scooped 14 digs. Freshman
Lauren Gaza came up with 45 digs while first-year
Gabi Trinker posted four blocks.
The River Hawks jumped ahead early, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-14. But that's when the Rangers caught fire, pulling even with 27-25 and 25-22 victories in the third and fourth sets. Drew won the third set in dramatic fashion, rallying from a 24-20 deficit. With Susquehanna serving for match point, Camacho-Tenreiro kept the Rangers alive with a kill before throwing down three consecutive points that put her team up 25-24. After the River Hawks tied it, freshman
Liberty Jackson posted a kill before the set ended on a Susquehanna attack error.
The Rangers continued to ride the momentum into the fourth set, jumping to an 8-2 lead. Carkhuff helped power the early surge with three straight kills. Susquehanna rallied to take a three-point lead midway through the set but Drew regrouped and pulled away down the stretch.
Neither side ever led by more than two points in an extremely tight deciding set. However, the River Hawks pulled out the victory by capturing the final two points on back-to-back kills from Rosina Esposito.
In their evening tilt, the Rangers faced another formidable foe in Juniata, which has won all 13 Landmark Conference titles since the formation of the conference in 2007. The Eagles won the opener 25-11 before the Blue and Green put up a strong showing in the second set, keeping it close all the way and trailing just 21-20 before Juniata closed on a 4-1 run. The Eagles clinched it with a 25-6 victory in the third set.
Camacho-Tenreiro threw down another seven kills versus the Eagles while Carkhuff contributed five kills. Butler dished out 18 assists, and Gaza notched 12 digs.
The Rangers continue Landmark Conference play on Wednesday, when they host the University of Scranton at 7 p.m.
