Women's Volleyball Sweeps John Jay

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's volleyball team used a balanced effort to capture a 3-0 victory over John Jay College in a non-conference match Friday evening in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers (13-5) won by scores of 25-12, 25-12, and 25-20.

Nine different players recorded at least one kill for Drew while 12 Rangers saw playing time.

The Blue and Green served up 13 aces, marking the team's third-highest total of the season.

Freshman Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro posted 10 kills and six digs for the Rangers while classmate Ashley Carkhuff notched six kills, eight digs, and a season-high-tying four aces. Sophomore Melina Christodoulou contributed six kills and a pair of blocks, and freshman setters Jasmine Butler and Shelby Weeden distributed 14 and 11 assists, respectively. Freshman Kiara Vasquez totaled eight digs.

In the opening set, the Rangers broke open a close match with a big 9-0 run, as a 15-9 lead ballooned into a 24-9 advantage. Carkhuff served on the final eight points of the decisive stretch, when she zipped in a pair of aces.

Drew used another late run to pull away in the second set. Leading 15-11, the Rangers reeled off seven straight points, with Camacho-Tenreiro serving on the final six.

The Bloodhounds (5-8) reversed the trend in the third set, using a late 5-1 spurt to cut an eight-point deficit in half at 24-20. But it was too little too late as senior Murielle Mason clinched the match with a kill.

Drew continues its season on Tuesday, when it visits Baruch College at 7 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
