Baruch Claims Rose City Title on Last-Second Shot

MADISON, N.J. - Tournament MVP Liam Sanborn hit a long-range 3-pointer with two seconds left, and Baruch College captured the 2021 Drew University Rose City Classic with a 64-62 victory over the Rangers in the championship game on Saturday in Baldwin Gym.

Drew (2-3) had just taken a 62-61 lead with eight seconds left, when senior guard David Gervase hit a pair of free throws. But coming out of a timeout, Sanborn dribbled up the court and drained a contested shot from deep in the right wing. The Rangers nearly answered with a desperation shot, as a halfcourt heave from Howard McBurnie, Jr. rimmed out at the buzzer.

The extremely tight game featured 12 ties and 10 lead changes.

Sanborn led all scorers with 19 points while McBurnie paced the Rangers with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Gervase scored six points in the final 1:06 and finished with 11 points to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team, along with Baruch's Jehmehl Fair, Farmingdale State's Nick Hurowitz, and Saint Elizabeth's Jarek Johnson. Gervase also scored 18 points in the team's first-round win over Saint Elizabeth.

Farmingdale State defeated Saint Elizabeth 64-51 in the consolation game earlier in the day.

Sophomore guard Malcolm Newman added 10 points for the Rangers, who shook off an early 6-0 deficit and took the lead (10-8) six minutes into the game. The Bearcats pushed their lead to nine - their biggest advantage of the game - late in the half and led 34-27 at the intermission.

Drew appeared to be pulling away midway through the second half, using a 16-4 run to go up seven (49-42) with 10:12 showing. Five different Rangers scored during the burst, with senior forward Mathew Capozzoli capping it with a 3-pointer.

Baruch answered with a 7-0 run over the next four minutes, setting up a nip-and-tuck final six minutes that included seven ties and five lead changes.

Gervase canned a 3-pointer with 3:31 left to knot the score before Baruch answered with a triple of its own to take a 59-56 lead with 3:02 remaining. Gervase put the Rangers on his shoulders in the final minute-plus, creating contact to earn three trips to the foul line. He made 2-of-3 free throws with 1:06 showing to pull his team to within 59-58, then put the Rangers up 60-59 when he connected on a pair from the stripe with 35 seconds left.

The Bearcats answered with a pair of foul shots of their own to go back up by one (61-60) before Gervase earned yet another trip to the line with eight seconds left, when he sunk two more to set up the wild finish.

Drew takes seven days off from competition before returning to action on Sunday, Nov. 28, when they host Wesleyan University at 2 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
