Men's Hoops Downs Brooklyn

MADISON, N.J. - Senior guard David Gervase posted his first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Drew University men's basketball team to an 85-64 victory over Brooklyn College in a non-conference tilt in Baldwin Gym Saturday afternoon.

Gervase knocked down five 3-pointers and led all scorers with his point total, which was also a season-high. Senior guard Lybrant Robinson posted 16 points and seven rebounds for the Rangers (4-5) while junior forward Michael Kane contributed 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Sophomore guard Malcolm Newman posted 11 points and five assists, and classmate James Anderson pitched in with nine points while shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Andre Estrada and Kayin Olajide netted 15 points apiece for the Bulldogs (1-10).

Brooklyn jumped out to a quick start and led 15-10 with 13:03 left in the opening half. But the Rangers responded with an 11-0 run midway through the period to take a 26-18 lead following a triple from Andrerson with 7:41 on the clock.

After the Bulldogs rallied to make it a one-point game, Drew ended the half with a 10-0 spurt to seize a 43-32 lead at the intermission. Robinson and Newman each scored four points to start the run before Gervase capped it with a baseline jumper in the closing seconds.

The Rangers continued to pull away at the start of the second half, outscoring Brooklyn 11-5 to open the period to go up 17 with 17:07 to go. Robinson started the run with a 3-pointer before Kane drilled back-to-back treys. Gervase ended the run with a steal and dunk to make it a 54-37 game.

The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 13 two minutes later, but yet another Drew run gave the hosts a 20-point lead (62-42) with 11:56 showing. Senior forward Mathew Capozzoli started the outburst with a lay-up before Gervase and senior guard Drew Gallagher followed up with back-to-back 3-pointers. Brooklyn was unable to get closer than 20 the rest of the way.

The Rangers take a week off from competition before picking up their schedule next Saturday with a non-conference match-up at Rutgers-Newark starting at 3 p.m.
