Men's Soccer Takes Catholic to Double Overtime in Spring Opener

MADISON, N.J. - Competing for the first time since the fall of 2019, the Drew University men's soccer team took defending Landmark Conference champion Catholic University to double overtime in its non-traditional season opener on Saturday in a frigid Ranger Stadium. The Cardinals struck with five minutes left in the second OT for a 2-1 win.

After Catholic struck first with an 11th-minute goal, the Rangers answered just a minute later when junior Brandon Jimenez headed in a perfect cross from senior Tony Oliveira

Two goalkeepers made their debuts in a Ranger uniform. Junior Alex Idrovo played the first half and made three saves while freshman David Hoyt also collected three stops the rest of the way.

After their official fall seasons were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in February the Landmark Conference Presidents' Council approved a plan for fall sports teams to conduct an expanded non-traditional season of up to four contests against fellow Landmark institutions.

The Landmark Conference determined that all of the contests are considered scrimmages and will not count as official NCAA or Landmark Conference games. In addition, Landmark standings will not be kept and official statistics will not be recorded.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Landmark Conference has decided to continue without fans in attendance at all athletic events. However, fans may follow all events live via the Landmark Digital Network, free of charge. Be sure to visit https://landmarknetwork.tv/drew/ for a complete listing of upcoming Drew events.

The Rangers play the second game of their four-match schedule next Saturday, when they travel to Juniata College for a 2 p.m. start.
