LANDMARK CHAMPS! Rangers Defeat Scranton 5-2 For Seventh LC Crown

Results

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's tennis team claimed its seventh Landmark Conference (LC) title and its first since 2013 with a 5-2 victory over the University of Scranton in the final of the LC Championships on Saturday in the Simon Forum.

Graduate student and tournament MVP Geoffrey Diehl clinched the match for the top-seeded Rangers with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles.  Diehl also teamed up junior Bret Schuler for an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles and finished the tournament 2-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.

The Rangers continued their undefeated season, moving to 10-0 on the season while extending their winning streak to 25 matches dating back to the 2019 season.

With its victory, Drew gains an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Team Championship. The Rangers will learn their opponent when the NCAA releases its field on Monday on NCAA.com.

The second-seeded Royals fell to 8-3 with the loss.

The Rangers opened the day by winning two of three doubles matches to seize a 2-1 lead. Diehl and Schuler stayed perfect at 10-0 on the season while junior Dan Blumenthal and freshman Jack Polvere were also victorious, claiming an 8-1 decision at No. 3.

Drew pushed its lead to 3-1 when freshman Santo Carroccia won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to push his record to 6-0 on the year. Scranton won at No. 2 singles to make it a 3-2 match before junior Jeremy Gottlieb and Diehl won just moments apart.

Trailing 5-0 in the first set, Gottlieb caught fire, storming back to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 to push his record to 7-1 for the season.

Diehl provided the finishing touches, rallying after dropping the first set to avenge a pair of losses earlier in the season to Scranton's Tarquin McGurrin, who entered the match sporting a 9-0 record.

Drew also captured the first six Landmark Conference titles from the league's inaugural season in 2008 through 2013. The six titles capped a string of 13 consecutive conference titles for the Rangers.
