Kiernan’s Game-Winner Lifts Men’s Soccer Over TCNJ

Madison, N.J. - The Drew University men's soccer team picked up its second win in a row on Wednesday following a close 2-1 finish versus The College of New Jersey in Ranger Stadium.

Freshman Kevin Kiernan was the hero of today's bout, as his first career goal wound up being to be the game winner, lifting the Rangers back to .500 (2-2) on the season.

Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game, with Drew slightly out shooting TCNJ 11-10. When it really counted, however, the Rangers were able to capitalize on a couple of great chances to come out on top.

Junior Lucas Portadin opened up the scoring after coming off the bench with just under eight minutes left in the first half. After a perfect cross from classmate Mike Dilger, Portadin reached the contested ball right in front of the net where he tipped it past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

The lead was short lived, however, as the Lions came right back and scored five minutes later off a free kick.

Following halftime, the Rangers quickly gained possession of the ball to open the second period. Not even two minutes in, junior Kyle Bethel took the ball up the middle and made a quick pass to a well-covered Kiernan in the box. After some fancy footwork Kiernan fired the ball towards the net and managed to place it just out of reach of the goalie.

With five shots over the previous three games, it was only a matter of time before Kiernan found the back of the net, and today he did so at the perfect time.

In the end this was all Drew needed as senior goalkeeper Calum Erlenborn and the defense shut out TCNJ for the entire second half. Erlenborn would finish with five saves on the day.

The Rangers will have only a few days rest before they return to action this Saturday at 1 p.m. when they head to New York to take on Manhattanville.
