MAHWAH, N.J. - Sophomore
Rebecca Racine continued her torrid start to the season as she recorded yet another goal to lift the Drew University women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout victory over Ramapo College on Wednesday.
With their third-straight win - all of which have been clean sheets - the Rangers improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Roadrunners fall to 0-4.
Junior goalkeeper
Anthi Panayides made a career-high seven saves to earn her first collegiate shutout for Drew.
The contest started off as a defensive showcase, with both teams limiting the other to just two shots on goal in the first half. The Ranger defense in particular was led by strong showings from sophomores
Lauren Geiger and
Jessie Brannick, as well as freshman
Rylee Sant'Angelo, all of whom stayed in for the full 90 minutes.
It wasn't until 12 minutes into the second half that the stalemate was broken.
Breakout freshman
Alexa Krause got things started when she fired a hard shot at the net which deflected off Ramapo's goalkeeper and right into the path of Racine, who flicked it in for the goal. The bang-bang play occurred almost instantaneously and proved the be the difference maker in an otherwise close match.
Racine now has six goals and 12 points in just five matches on the season.
The assist was the first of the year for Krause, whose seven points are second to only Racine for the team lead.
Of course, this wasn't all for the Rangers.
With less than three minutes left in the game, junior
Ayla Lopez capped off the day in style after she took a long pass from junior
Gabby Gilgorri right into a one-on-one with Ramapo's goalie, culminating in her sneaking the ball through for her third goal of the season.
The Rangers return to action this Saturday when they take on New York University at 4 p.m. in Ranger Stadium.
