Women's Volleyball Holds Off Misericordia in Barnburner

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's volleyball team continued to roll in its inaugural season, improving to 8-1 following an epic 3-1 victory over Misericordia University on Thursday evening in Baldwin Gym.

In a match that lasted over two hours, the Rangers prevailed 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25. Neither side led by more than five points

Drew has now won six matches in a row after capturing its first four-set victory in team history. The Rangers have posted six sweeps and won an additional match in five sets.

Freshman Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro led Drew with a season-high 24 kills on 60 swings to go with 17 digs for her third double-double of the season. Freshman Ashley Carkhuff, freshman Liberty Jackson, and sophomore Melina Christodoulou contributed eight kills apiece, with Christodoulou also posting three blocks (one solo). Freshman Shelby Weeden registered her third double-double of the season with 20 assists and 10 digs while classmate Jasmine Butler dished out 22 assists. Freshman Lauren Gaza scooped 23 digs for the Rangers.

The Rangers were in control early on in the opening set, jumping out to a 15-5 lead. The Cougars (2-8) rallied, however, coming all the way back to tie it (21-21) before the Rangers ended the match on a 4-1 spurt.

The second set was a nip-and-tuck affair in which neither side led by more than three. It was all tied up at 18 before Drew closed out the period on a 7-3 surge.

Misericordia enjoyed its largest lead of the night in the third set, when it led 21-16. The Rangers sliced the deficit to one, 24-23, on a kill from Jackson, but the Cougars won the set on the following point.

The final set was as close as the second, as neither side was able to build more than a two-point lead nearly the entire way. For most of the period, the visitors held a slight lead or the set was tied. Camacho-Tenreiro came up big for the Rangers, throwing down seven of her kills in the final frame, with her last one giving her team a 26-25 lead. The night ended on a Cougar attack error.

Drew takes four days off from competition before visiting Cedar Crest on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in another non-conference match.
