Madison, N.J. - The Drew University men's soccer team shut out Kean University over the final 68 minutes, but the Cougars scored two early goals en route to a 2-0 victory Wednesday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.
With the loss, the Rangers are now 2-4 on the season, while Kean climbs to 5-1-1.
Both Kean goals came within the first 22 minutes of the match. From that point on, however, the Rangers played a near flawless defense and managed to hold the Cougars to just six more shots, including just one on goal, over the remainder of the contest.
This stout defense was led by strong outings from sophomore Hunter Gollin and graduate student Ryan LaRocca, with both staying in for the entire game. Senior Calum Erlenborn and sophomore David Hoyt split goalkeeping duties, each playing one period.
Offensively, Drew was in control for much of the game, outshooting Kean 12-9. But Cougar goalie Amr Mahmoud was on point, stopping all six shots on goal.
Sophomore Christian Tyson came close to breaking the shutout multiple times as he racked up three shots on the day, including two on goal. His best opportunity came just 47 seconds in the second half when he was in prime position to score on a penalty kick. However, Mahmoud just managed to stop his shot to the left side of the net.
The Rangers will return to action this Saturday at 4 p.m. when they take on Juniata College in their first Landmark Conference matchup of the season.
