MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's soccer team out-shot Juniata 21-6, but the two sides played to a scoreless draw in the Landmark Conference (LC) opener for both teams on Saturday at Ranger Stadium.
Sophomore
David Hoyt collected five saves to earn his first career shutout for the Rangers (2-4-1, 0-1-1 LC). He was also making his first official collegiate start.
Drew placed seven of its shots on frame, with two apiece coming from junior
Modesto Nogueira and freshman
Kevin Kiernan.
Alex Grater finished with seven saves for Juniata (2-3-1, 0-0-1 LC)
The Rangers threatened early, as a long blast from Nogueira deflected off Grater's hands and bounced straight down off the crossbar before being cleared away by a defender.
Later in the opening half Drew received a penalty kick but senior
Brandon Jimenez had his slam off the left post.
The Rangers nearly broke through again early in the second half when sophomore
Christian Tyson's well-struck left-footer seemed to be heading into the upper-left corner of the net. But Grater made another leaping save to keep the game tied.
Drew out-shot Juniata 17-4 in regulation and 3-1 in the first overtime. However, the Eagles took the only shot in the second extra session.
The Rangers return home on Wednesday, when they take on DeSales University at 7 p.m. in another non-conference match-up.
