MADISON, N.J. - Freshman
Kevin Kiernan scored two goals - including what held up as the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 49th minute - and the Drew University men's soccer team defeated DeSales University 3-2 in a non-conference match-up Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium.
All but one of the goals in the game were scored in the first half, when the Rangers outshot the Bulldogs 10-5.
Drew (3-4-1) never trailed after junior
Mike Dilger scored in the ninth minute with his first goal of the season and the second of his career. Classmate
Lucas Portadin assisted on the tally.
The Bulldogs (4-5) pulled even on a penalty kick in the 11th minute, only to see the Rangers reclaim the lead on Kiernan's first goal of the night. Senior
Ryan LaRocca provided the assist as the hosts took a 2-1 lead just over 20 minutes into the game.
DeSales tied it again nine minutes later, and the scoreboard read 2-2 at halftime.
Kiernan struck again four minutes into the second half, converting his first collegiate penalty kick attempt. It was also his team-leading fourth goal of the season, two of which have been game-winners.
Neither team would score over the remaining 41 minutes, and the Rangers out-shot DeSales 7-4 in the second half.
Sophomore
David Hoyt picked up one save to earn the victory in goal for Drew.
The Rangers continue their season on Saturday, when they visit Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference tilt starting at 4 p.m.
