MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's volleyball team rallied for an epic 3-2 victory versus the United States Merchant Marine Academy, then swept Wilson College 3-0 to complete a 2-0 day at the court in Baldwin Gym Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers, who trailed 1-0 and 2-1 versus Merchant Marine, are now 11-2 in their inaugural season.
Drew nearly fell behind 2-0 versus the Mariners after dropping the first set 25-20. But the Rangers pulled out a 28-26 set two victory. USMMA rallied for a 25-21 set three win before Drew embarked on its comeback, winning 25-12 and 15-11.
Freshmen
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro and
Ashley Carkhuff led the Rangers offensively, with each player exceeding 20 kills. Camacho-Tenreiro fired up 24 kills and 19 digs while Carkhuff threw down a season-high 21 kills. Sophomore
Melina Christodoulou registered a season-high 16 kills to go with three blocks.
Freshman
Jasmine Butler notched 26 assists and 13 digs while fellow setter
Shelby Weeden distributed 23 assists. Freshman
Lauren Gaza scooped 18 digs while classmate
Peyton McGregor recorded four blocks. Freshman
Gabi Trinker also posted three blocks.
The Rangers were in control versus Wilson, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-15, and 25-13. Carkhuff led Drew with 14 kills while Camacho-Tenreiro recorded 12 kills and 12 digs. Butler handed out 29 assists. Gaza finished with 13 digs and three aces.
Drew returns to Baldwin Gym on Wednesday, when it hosts SUNY New Paltz in a non-conference match-up starting at 7 p.m.
