Women's Volleyball Sweeps New Paltz

MADISON, N.J. - Freshman Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro posted 18 kills and 11 digs as the Drew University women's volleyball team cruised past SUNY New Paltz 3-0 in a non-conference match Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

Drew won by scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-14 for their eighth sweep of the season.

Freshman Ashley Carkhuff added 10 kills and four service aces for the Rangers, who improved to 12-2 in their inaugural season while staying undefeated (8-0) at home.

Freshman setter Jasmine Butler just missed a double-double with 14 assists and nine digs. Freshman setter Shelby Weeden handed out 10 assists while classmate Gabi Trinker knocked down three blocks.

The Rangers jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the opening set before eventually pushing their advantage to 19-9. After the Hawks pulled to within five (21-16), Drew closed out the set on a 4-1 spurt.

The Blue and Green started out hot again in the second set, racing to a 6-1 lead and prompting a New Paltz timeout. The Hawks promptly responded with a 5-0 surge, but were never able to take the lead. Drew used a 5-0 spurt, which included two aces from Carkhuff, to go up 13-8, it would gradually pull away from there.

Once again, the Rangers took control early in the final set, outscoring New Paltz 13-5 to open the stanza. The visitors closed the gap to 16-12 before the hosts closed out the match on a 9-2 run.

Drew plays the program's first-ever Landmark Conference matches on Saturday, when it travels to Juniata College. The Rangers play Susquehanna at 1:30 p.m. before facing 12th-ranked Juniata at 6:30 p.m.
