MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's soccer team competed in its first official match in nearly two years, but came up just short in a 3-2 loss Saturday evening in Ranger Stadium on the first day of the Drew Fall Festival.
Drew scored the game's first goal, when senior
Brandon Jimenez headed in a cross from junior
Modesto Nogueira.
The Devils scored the next two tallis to assume a 2-1 lead midway through the opening quarter. However, Drew pulled even with 11 minutes on the clock, as junior
Lucas Portadin struck on a give-and-go with sophomore
Christian Tyson and it was a 2-2 game at the break.
FDU scored what proved to be the game-winner midway through the second half on an own goal. The Devils fired a shot that was deflected into the net by a Ranger defender, and neither side managed to break through the rest of the way.
Senior
Alex Idrovo made his first official start in goal for the Rangers, and he made an impressive leaping, fingertip save in the closing minutes of the opening half.
Drew outshot the Devils 22-4 on the night and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Rangers now compete in the tournament consolation game, where they will take on SUNY New Paltz at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Rowan and FDU will face in the championship match at 6:30 after Rowan defeated New Paltz 3-2 in the other first-round match on Saturday.
