Women's Volleyball Downs Montclair State in Nailbiter

MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The Drew University women's volleyball team went the distance for the second time this season, but this time came out on the winning side, holding off Montclair State 3-2 in a thrilling non-conference outing Thursday evening.

The Rangers (4-1) have now won four of the first five matches in team history and finished 3-1 over a four-match road trip.

Drew also played a five-set match this past Saturday, when Penn State Harrisburg rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2.

Just like on Saturday, Drew captured the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-16, before Montclair State stormed back with 25-20 and 25-22 victories to force a tiebreaker. However, the Rangers prevailed 15-13, as freshman Lauren Gaza netted the match-clinching kill.

Freshman Andrea Camaoch-Tenreiro led the Rangers with her second double-double of the year, posting a season-high 20 kills - including four in the fifth set - to go with 16 digs. Freshman Ashley Carkhuff added 11 kills and 13 digs for her first career double-double while sophomore Melina Christodoulou contributed 11 kills and four blocks, including a big solo stuff late in the fifth set.

Gaza contributed 24 digs and five aces while freshman Jasmine Butler dished out 29 assists. Freshman Shelby Weeden handed out 17 assists while classmate Kiara Vasquez pitched in with 12 digs.

The Rangers return home on Saturday for a tri-match starting at 10 a.m., when they take on Mount Saint Vincent. Drew also will face Wilkes starting at 2 p.m.
