Susquehanna Rallies Past Men’s Hoops

MADISON, N.J. - Susquehanna University rallied from 12 points down in the second half and hit a pair of go-ahead free throws with 2.9 seconds left to hand the Rangers a 76-74 setback in a thrilling Landmark Conference men's basketball match-up Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak by the Rangers (10-6, 4-1 LC), who suffered their first Landmark Conference game of the year.

Senior guard David Gervase knocked down six 3-pointers and led all players with 23 points for Drew while sophomore guard Malcolm Newman and senior guard Lybrant Robinson scored 15 points each. Junior forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. posted his 13th double-double of the year with 10 points and 12 rebounds while tying a career-high with six assists.

Dominic Dunn scored 21 points on 4-of-6 3-point shooting to lead the River Hawks (11-4, 3-1 LC).

The game featured a match-up of the last two Landmark Conference champions. Drew captured the title last season, when Susquehanna did not compete, while the River Hawks won the 2019-20 crown.

Susquehanna gained possession with 16 seconds left and worked for a final shot with the game tied at 74-all. Danny Frauenheim drew a foul while driving to the basket, and he went on to make his first two free throw attempts of the night.

The Rangers then heaved a full-court pass that was tipped out of bounds in front of the Drew bench. Coming out of a timeout with 2.3 seconds left, they managed to get off a shot but a 3-pointer by junior forward Michael Kane was off the mark.

The back-and-forth affair featured four ties and 10 lead changes. In an offensively-charged first half, Gervase carried the Rangers, hitting 4 of 5 3-pointers in the opening 12 minutes to give his team a four-point lead.

Susquehanna used a 14-3 run to open up a 32-27 lead 6:13 left in the period. However, the Rangers closed the half with an 8-2 surge, capped by a baseline jumper from Robinson at the buzzer that put his team up 39-38 heading into the locker room.

Susquehanna led 55-52 with 13:49 left before Drew caught fire, using a 15-0 run to open up its 12-point lead (67-55) with 8:50 left. Four different Rangers scored during the run, which included 3-pointers from junior forward Michael Kane and Gervase.

The River Hawks would rally, however, and a 9-2 run cut the gap to five (69-64) with 5:02 left. Newman dropped in a lay-up with 1:06 left to put Drew up 74-69, but Susquehanna scored the next five points, with Dunn hitting a jumper to tie the game with 18 ticks showing. But the Rangers missed the front end of a 1-and-1, setting up Fraunheim's go-ahead free throws.

Drew caps a three-game homestand on Saturday, when it takes on Juniata College at 2 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
