WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Competing in the third match of its inaugural season, the Drew University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at undefeated King's College on Sunday afternoon.
The Rangers kept it close in the first two sets, but the Monarchs (5-0) won 25-17 in each of them. The hosts then claimed the third set 25-11.
Freshman
Jacob Sledz paced the Rangers (0-3) with nine kills and five digs while sophomore
Omarf Ortega-Reyes totaled five kills, seven digs, and a pair of service aces. Freshman
Huriel Perez dished out 20 assists while classmate
C.J. Addeo contributed four kills and a pair of aces.
In the opening set, Drew jumped out to a 5-3 lead following back-to-back kills from Addeo. The Rangers led 7-6 before King's opened up a gap with a 10-2 run. The Rangers rallied with a late 3-1 spurt, with Sledz, Ortega-Reyes, and junior
Furat Alhayek contributing one kill apiece to make it 20-15. But the Monarchs outscored Drew 5-2 the rest of the way.
King's took control of the second set early on, outscoring the Rangers 10-4 to start the stanza. However, the Rangers nearly played the Monarchs even the rest of the way and drew to within three on three occasions, the last coming on a Sledz kill that made it 17-14. However, King's ended the match on an 8-3 run.
The Monarchs started strong again in the third set, opening with a 13-3 run. Though they were unable to draw closer than nine the rest of the way, the Rangers continued to battle and put together a late 3-0 surge, capped by back-to-back aces from Ortega-Reyes.
Drew continues its season on Tuesday, when it visits Widener University in a makeup match starting at 7:30 p.m.
