MADISON, N.J. – In a rematch of last year's Landmark Conference (LC) championship game, Catholic University scored the first four goals and handed the Rangers their first loss of the year, a 4-1 setback in a chilly, wet Ranger Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals (6-1-3, 2-0 LC), the defending conference champions, scored twice in the opening 14 minutes, then tallied two more in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
The Rangers (9-1-1, 0-1-1 LC) broke up the shutout in the 81st minute, when junior
Tyler Watson headed in a free kick from classmate
Federico Vazquez for his first collegiate goal.
Drew also saw its nine-match home winning streak come to an end; it had not lost in Ranger Stadium dropping a 2-0 decision to Kean University on Sept. 22, 2021.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute, when Jack McAvoy converted off a corner kick. A minute later, Catholic keeper Austin Coron made a kick save on an offering from sophomore
Kevin Kiernan, and Darius Siahpoosh followed up, scoring from in close in the 14th minute to put the Cardinals up 2-0.
Siahpoosh struck again in the 48th minute, heading home a long cross from Ben Zimmer. Domenic Caltabiano tallied Catholic's final goal in the 55th minute.
Watson's goal was the only Drew shot on frame in the second half.
Kiernan and freshman
James Cahill led the Rangers with three shots apiece.
Senior
Calum Erlenborn made all three of his saves during the second half for the Rangers. Coron stopped one shot for Catholic, which held an 11-9 edge in shots. Both sides earned four corners.
The Rangers return home on Wednesday, when they take on Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference match starting at 7 p.m.
