MADISON, N.J. – The Drew women's soccer team had several good chances to get on the scoreboard, but Catholic held its ground as the teams finished in a 0-0 draw on Saturday in Landmark Conference play.
Next up for the Rangers (6-3-1, 1-0-1) is a non-conference match at William Paterson on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Cardinals nearly tallied in the opening seconds of the contest. Alexa Adelman fired a rising shot inside the penalty area that Ranger goalie
Anthi Panayides collected.
Drew's best chance to get on the scoreboard came with just over 28 minutes showing on the clock.
Isabella Grof-Tisza carried the ball on goal from the right side on a two-on-one, rifling a low shot on net that Cardinal goalie Ava Rieger stopped.
In the second half, the hosts had a tremendous chance to break the tie in the 58th minute.
Rebecca Racine got off a shot from the doorstep that Rieger blocked away, while
Ayla Lopez directed the rebound wide.
The visitors had a solid opportunity five minutes later when Jordan Siok cut the center of the penalty area and directed a shot to the lower-left corner, but Ranger goalie
Amina Cirkiel, who entered the contest at the start of the second frame, made a diving stop.
Drew kept the pressure on the Cardinals and earned a free kick from 30 yards.
Sam Kievit hooked a shot with her left foot around the Catholic wall, but Rieger again made the save.
Cirkiel made the save of the game with just over 13 minutes remaining. Catholic's Isabella DeAvila got off a shot from the top of the box that Cirkiel dove to her left and snared the bid.
The hosts made one final push with just over a minute left, but Rieger made a save from close range by Lopez, and Krause's follow-up bid was blocked by a defender keeping the game scoreless.
Panayides (two saves) and Cirkiel (four) combined for the shutout, while Rieger had nine saves for the Cardinals.
