Drew Ties Unbeaten WestConn, 1-1

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's soccer team nearly netted its biggest win of the season on Tuesday against Western Connecticut State University, but the Wolves spoiled the upset bid with a tally with just over four minutes remaining as the teams finished in a 1-1 tie.

Drew (10-1-3) heads back to Landmark Conference play on Saturday with a road match at Elizabethtown starting at 1:00 p.m.

WestConn (14-0-1) entered the contest as one of only two teams in Division III that was unbeaten and untied with the top-ranked University of Chicago being the other.

The Rangers grabbed an early lead, scoring off a set piece 4:29 into the contest. Thomas Zurkowski took a free kick just to the left of the WestConn penalty area and Christian Tyson headed the ball into the net for his eighth tally of the season.

Drew's defense allowed only one shot on goal in the opening half with keeper Calum Erlenborn making a sprawling save on a bid by Franz Muhaj. Erlenborn also made a key play minutes later, collecting the ball before a Wolves player could get off a shot.

In the second half, the visitors pressed holding a 12-2 shot advantage. Erlenborn was outstanding, making several big stops and important reads to keep the game scoreless. A Ranger foul in the final minutes gave the Wolves a free kick outside of the penalty area and Filipe Dutra got a shot off the entry that a Ranger defender tried to clear, but the momentum of the ball carried it into the net with 4:02 on the clock.

Erlenborn finished with seven saves, while WestConn rotated three keepers, with Justin Figueiredo making the only two stops.

WestConn finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots and took six of the contest's eight corner kicks.
