MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University women's volleyball team gave Stevens all it could handle, but the Ducks prevailed 3-1 in a tight non-conference match Thursday evening in Baldwin Gym.
In a match that lasted two hours and included 31 ties and 14 lead changes, Stevens (16-6) won 27-25, 25-21, 26-28, 25-19 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Sophomore
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro registered a big double-double for the Rangers (10-10), posting 21 kills and 21 digs while taking a season-high 73 swings. Sophomore
Ashley Carkhuff added 12 kills and 18 digs to go with three blocks while classmate
Jasmine Butler contributed 41 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore
Lauren Gaza tied her career-high with five service aces, and junior
Melina Christodoulou threw down five blocks.
Liz Patterson led Stevens, the two-time defending MAC Freedom Conference champion, with 13 kills and 24 digs.
The Ducks jumped to a quick 8-0 start in the opening set. However, Drew responded with an 8-1 run and came all the way back to take the lead at 14-13, setting up an extremely close finish in which neither side would lead by more than three the rest of the way. The Rangers twice served for set point, but Stevens ended the period with the final three points.
The second set was close throughout, and the scoreboard read 19-19 before the Ducks broke it open with a late 4-0 spurt.
Drew rallied again in the third set after Stevens opened on a 12-5 run. The Rangers pulled even at 14-all on a block from Carkhuff and freshman
Marissa Guajardo, only to see the Ducks edge ahead by three.
Stevens was serving for match point at 24-21 before the Rangers closed the set on a flurry, starting with a 4-0 run. Christodoulou and freshman
Teeya Desgoutte combined for a block to make it 24-23 before a Camacho-Tenreiro kill tied it up. A Stevens attack error gave the Rangers a 25-24 lead, but the Ducks scored the next two points to go up 26-25. However, Drew refused to go away once again, ending the match on a 3-0 run on back-to-back kills from Desgoutte and Camacho-Tenreiro and an ace from Carkhuff.
The back-and-forth battle continued into the fourth set, and Stevens led just 13-11 before using a 5-0 run to open up some breathing room. The Rangers were unable to get closer than four the rest of the way.
Drew continues its four-match homestand on Saturday, when it hosts Sarah Lawrence College at 10 a.m. and Montclair State University at 2 p.m. in a non-conference tri-match.
