SCRANTON, Pa. – The Drew men's soccer team earned a big Landmark Conference victory on Wednesday night in Scranton, blanking the Royals 2-0.
The Rangers (11-2-3, 1-2-2) remain on the road on Saturday with another league match at Juniata with a 1:00 p.m. start.
Scoring chances were at a premium in the opening half with the Royals getting the first two in the initial 15 minutes. Anthony Rizzi put a long shot on goal that Ranger goalie
Calum Erlenborn steered aside with a leaping stop. He then recorded another save on the ensuing corner kick with 2:39 expired.
Drew's best chance came with 10:45 on the scoreboard, as
Tino Puentes one-touched a loose ball in the Scranton penalty area that goalie Aidan Hartey snared.
The Rangers had an opportunity five minutes into the second half when
Kevin Kiernan found space on the left side, but his bid went wide of the far post.
The visitors broke through in the 56th minute for a 1-0 lead when
Gabe Di Pierro had his initial shot blocked by a defender, but collected the rebound and sent a low shot into the net for his second tally of the season.
Drew added an insurance goal with 15:00 remaining on a restart.
Thomas Zurkowski sent a direct kick from the left sideline deep into the Scranton penalty area where
James Cahill headed the offering into the upper-right corner of the net.
That cushion was enough for Erlenborn, who finished the game with four saves for his fifth shutout of the season.
Hartey had five stops for the Royals, as Drew held a 14-11 advantage in shots.
