Women’s Soccer Clinches Top-Three Playoff Seed With Victory at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Senior Gabby Gilgorri and junior Rebecca Racine scored one goal apiece and the Drew University women's soccer team clinched a top-three seeding in the Landmark Conference (LC) Championships with a 2-1 victory at Juniata College on Saturday.

The Rangers (10-4-2, 4-1-1 LC), who also reached the 10-win mark for the first time since 2013, will finish as the second or third seed in the conference championships, which include the top-four teams in the standings. They will face Susquehanna University in the semifinals at a location to be determined, and it will mark Drew's first appearance in the Landmark Championships since 2014.

After knocking on the door early on, the Rangers broke open a scoreless match in the 30th minute, when Gilgorri drilled in a penalty kick for her first goal of the season.

The Rangers fired off six shots on goal in the opening half, but Juniata goalie Cati Besch kept it close with five saves. Senior Anthi Panayides turned aside the only shot she faced.

The Eagles tied it up with a PK of their own in the 56th minute, when Savanna Murray found the back of the net. But seven minutes later, Racine punched in what held up as the game-winner. She took a looping cross from sophomore Alexa Krause and worked around a defender before booting in her ninth goal of the season.

Once again, the Rangers had the upper hand in terms of possession, outshooting Juniata 8-4 in the second half. But Besch collected five more saves for the Eagles.

Sophomore Amina Cirkiel played the second half in goal for Drew and made a pair of saves.

The Rangers finished with advantages in both shots (18-5) and corner kicks (5-1).

Drew plays its regular-season finale on Saturday, when it hosts Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference tilt starting at 4 p.m.
