ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Drew University women's volleyball team capped play at the DeSales University Quad Match in impressive fashion on Saturday, earning two more wins over regionally-ranked opponents to finish the weekend with a 3-0 record,
The Rangers (15-11) began action on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 30-28 and 25-11) over the host institution and then defeated Hamilton in four sets (25-22, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-20). On Friday, Drew beat Rowan and all three wins came over teams ranked in the top eight of their respective regions.
The Rangers return to the court on Wednesday, hosting Moravian at 7:00 p.m. in a Landmark Conference contest.
Drew opened the day by taking on the host Bulldogs, with the initial set being close early. After five early ties, the visitors bounced back from a 15-12 deficit with a 5-0 run to take the lead for good.
Leila Ksiyer sparked that surge with four service points and
Teeya Desgoutte gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead with a kill for the final point.
The teams engaged in the longest set of the day in game two, resulting in a 30-28 Drew win. The Rangers tied the match at 22-22 and the squads would pull even with each other until the visitors recorded the final two points. Drew secured the match with an
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro kill for a 29-28 edge and a Bulldog attack error gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead in the match.
Drew finished the sweep with two modest runs (6-0 and 5-0) in the third set. The Rangers never trailed and Camacho-Tenreiro recorded the final point with a kill.
Camacho-Tenreiro led the visitors with 13 kills and added four aces and 10 digs, while
Melina Christodoulou had a big match at the net with nine kills, three solo blocks and eight blocking assists, breaking her own school record for blocks in a match.
Jasmine Butler led all players with 37 assists and
Lauren Gaza dug out 23 balls.
Against Hamilton, the Rangers grabbed a 1-0 lead with a 5-0 burst to turn a two-deficit into a 22-19 edge.
Ashley Carkhuff provided two big kills in that time and Desgoutte knocked down the final point with another successful attack.
After the Continentals tied the match 1-1, Drew used a 9-0 run in the third set to claim a 2-1 advantage. Carkhuff was a catalyst during that stretch with two aces and two kills. For the set, Drew finished with five service aces.
The Rangers capped the perfect weekend by taking care of Hamilton in the fourth set. Drew broke a 13-13 tie with three-straight points and then finished the Continentals off by recording five of the set's final six points. Camacho-Tenreiro and Ksiyer had kills for the final two points to close out the triumph.
Butler recorded a double-double with 40 assists and 15 digs, while Camach0-Tenreiro matched that feat with 15 kills, 14 digs and four aces. Desgoutte chipped in with 13 kills and Carkhuff added 11, while Gaza had a match-best 25 digs.
