Butler Reaches 1000 Assists in Landmark Conference Tilt

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore Jasmine Butler reached the career 1,000-assist mark, but the Drew University women's volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision to the University of Scranton in a Landmark Conference (LC) match Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

The Royals prevailed by scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-19.

Entering the night with 992 helpers, Butler reached her milestone in the opening set, when she dished out 10 assists. She is the first player in team history to accomplish the feat, as the Rangers are in their second year as a varsity program. Butler finished with a double-double of 31 assists and 10 digs.

Sophomore Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro threw down 18 kills for Drew (9-8, 0-3 LC) while freshman Marissa Guajardo served up four aces. Sophomore Lauren Gaza contributed with 13 digs.

Carah Vitkus registered 11 kills to lead Scranton (12-7, 3-0 LC).

It was a back-and-forth battle in the opening set, which featured seven ties and two lead changes. The Rangers led by as much as three on three occasions, then used a late 4-0 run, which included a pair of Camacho-Tenreiro aces, to go up 20-16.  However, that's when the Royals rallied with a 9-2 run to end the set.

Drew came out strong in the second set as well and led 8-3 following an ace from sophomore Kiara Vasquez. But a 16-2 run from Scranton opened things up for the visitors.

The Royals surged early in the final set and led 21-9 late, only to see the Rangers battle back with an 8-3 run that included three kills from sophomore Ashley Carkhuff that made it a six-point match (23-17). Back-to-back kills from Camacho-Teneiro pulled the deficit down to five (24-19) before Scranton clinched the match with a kill of its own.

Drew is back in action on Friday, when it visits New Paltz at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference match.
