NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - The Drew University women's volleyball team played three strong sets Friday at SUNY New Paltz, but the host Hawks came away with a 3-0 win over the Rangers.
New Paltz (13-2) won by scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 25-23, extending its winning streak to five.
Drew (9-9), ranked 22nd nationally in service aces per set, had another solid effort recording all 10 aces in the match.
The Rangers grabbed the early lead in the opening set at 6-2 thanks to four-straight points.
Marissa Guajardo sparked the modest run with a pair of service aces. The hosts tied the score at 6-6 with the teams being deadlocked four more times before the Hawks took the lead for good at 17-16. Drew made a nice push late behind four kills by
Teeya Desgoutte and two aces by
Kiara Vasquez, but New Paltz held on for the 25-22 win.
The teams played another tight match in the middle frame with the teams eventually tied at 18-18, following an ace by Drew's
Jasmine Butler and a kill by
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro. New Paltz finished the stanza by recording seven of the final nine points to grab a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final set, the Rangers held a late 22-21 lead thanks to a kill by Desgoutte, but New Paltz's Mackenize Williams notched three kills over the final four points to give the hosts a two-point victory in the third and final set.
Desgoutte topped Drew with seven kills, followed by Camacho-Tenreiro with six and
Melina Christodoulou with five.
Lauren Gaza had a match-high four aces with 20 digs, while Butler had a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs. Guajardo chipped in with three blocking assists.
Williams paced all players with 18 kills, while Cate DiGiacomo dished out 33 assists and had 17 digs.
The Rangers remain on the road on Tuesday, heading to Vassar for a 7:00 p.m. start
