ONEONTA, N.Y. – SUNY Oneonta broke open a close game with a big run to start the second half and handed the Drew University men's basketball team a 76-55 setback in the championship game of the Michael A. Freilich Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers (1-1) trailed just 38-32 at halftime, but the Red Dragons used a 31-5 surge to take control. Drew refused to go away, however, and put together a 17-4 run to pull to within 74-55 late in the contest.
Junior guard
Malcolm Newman (15 points), senior forward
Michael Kane (11 points), and junior guard
James Anderson (eight points) were the Rangers' top scorers while senior forward
Howard McBurnie, Jr. grabbed seven rebounds.
Graham Wooden scored 15 points to lead the Dragons (3-0), who owned a 44-26 rebounding advantage.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the early going, with neither side leading by more than four until the final two minutes of the first half. A Kane lay-up put the Rangers up 30-29 with 3:03 left in the period, but that's when Oneonta used a 9-2 run to close the period and open up a six-point halftime lead, setting up their game-breaking second-half run.
The Rangers play their home opener on Tuesday, when they take on Saint Elizabeth University in a non-conference tilt beginning at 5 p.m.
