Men’s Hoops Topped by Haverford

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's basketball team scored 49 second-half points, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit and the Rangers were handed a 76-67 setback by Haverford College in a non-conference tilt Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

Senior forward Michael Kane (19 points), junior guard Andrew Turco (15 points), and junior guard James Anderson (12 points) were the leading scorers for Drew, which shot 53.1% from the field in the second half after trailing 31-38 at the break. Turco added a career-high four steals while Kane and freshman forward David Musial grabbed six rebounds apiece.

The Fords (3-5), who shot 57.8% for the game and 56.0% (14-25) from 3-point range, were paced by Jackson Ryan, who scored 19 points and connected on 5-of-8 3-pointers.

Haverford never trailed after scoring the first seven points of the game, but the Rangers used a 7-1 run to pull within one and tied the game at 11-11 on an Anderson lay-up with 9:44 left in the opening half. The Fords still led by just one with less than eight minutes to go in the period before using a 9-0 run, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Ryan, to open up a 23-13 lead with 6:20 to go.

The Fords made it a 17-3 run to go up 16 before sophomore guard Papie Roberts went 2-for-2 at the line, making it a 13-point game at the intermission.

Harry Johnson hit a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the second half to push the visitors' lead back to 16, but the Rangers ran off the next eight points to cut the deficit in half. Anderson sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a Turco lay-up to make it 34-26 with 18:22 left in the game.

The Rangers were able to nudge within seven on three occasions, the last time coming on a Turco trey that made it 45-38 with 13:30 to go. However, Charlie Mamlin answered with a 3 for Haverford, which eventually pushed its lead back to 16 (60-44) with 7:25 left.

However, Drew refused to go quietly and eventually pulled to within single digits in the final minute. Freshman forward Kevin Cronin connected from beyond the arc with 33 seconds left  to make it 73-65 before Haverford went 1-for-2 at the charity stripe four seconds later. Musial made it a seven-point game (74-67) with a fastbreak layup, but the Fords iced the game when Ryan hit a pair of foul shots with 16 seconds left to set the final score.

The Rangers are back in action next Saturday, when they host York (N.Y.) College in another non-conference affair starting at 2 p.m.
