MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's volleyball team swept Middlesex County College 3-0 in a matchup between two first-year programs on Thursday in Baldwin Gym.
The Rangers (8-12) won by scores of 25-16, 25-10, 25-14.
The Blue Colts were competing in their inaugural match.
Freshman
Jacob Sledz led the way for Drew, firing up 11 kills and three service aces to go with 21 digs - the most by a Ranger this season. First-year
Ephraim Smith tallied nine kills and three blocks while classmate
Bryan Do finished with seven kills. Freshman
Huriel Perez handed out 26 assists, and sophomore
David Hoyt registered 12 digs while competing at libero.
Deivy Perez led Middlesex with six kills.
Drew trailed just once the entire evening - when it was 1-0 in the third set. In all three sets, the Rangers pulled away late.
In the first period, Drew led just 15-13 before ending it with a 10-3 run. It was also close in the early going in the second set, when the Blue and Green led 9-5. But the hosts outscored Middlesex 16-5 to win going away. The Rangers did it again in the final set, outscoring the Colts 10-2 to end the match.
The Rangers are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Alvernia University for a tri-match. Drew takes on Messiah at 1 p.m. before playing Alvernia at 3 p.m.
