Men's Volleyball Stopped by NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Drew University men's volleyball team lost a tough 3-0 decision at New Jersey City University Wednesday evening.

The Rangers (6-10), who saw their three-match winning streak come to an end, lost 25-14 in the opening set before battling the Gothic Knights to a pair of close decisions in the final two, falling just 25-21 and 26-24.

Sophomore Omarf Ortega-Reyes led Drew with 10 kills while freshman Ephraim Smith tallied seven kills and eight digs. Freshman Jacob Sledz also scooped eight digs while first-year Huriel Perez totaled 22 assists and six digs. Junior Furat Alhayek contributed three blocks (one solo).

Mahmoud Serour led NJCU (10-5) with 12 kills and eight digs.

In the second set, the Rangers jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but the Gothic Knights rallied with an 11-3 run midway through the period to open up a 21-17 lead. Drew trailed just 22-20 before the hosts put the match away with a 3-1 run.

The Knights opened the final set on a 9-4 run, but the Rangers refused to go quietly. Trailing 22-16 late in the set, Drew reeled off an 8-2 run to pull even at 24-all. But NJCU ended the match on a service error and a kill from Serour.

Drew is back in action on Friday, when it hosts Purchase starting at 7 p.m.
