Men's Volleyball Cruises Past Neumann

MADISON, N.J. - Freshman Jacob Sledz threw down 19 kills and hit .581 on the night as the Drew University men's volleyball team swept Neumann University 3-0 in Baldwin Gym Thursday evening.

The Rangers won by scores of 25-12, 25-22, 25-18 while improving to 5-2 at home this season. They also tied their second-best hitting percentage of the season (.367).

Sledz posted his second-highest kills total of the year while making just one error on 31 attempts. He also scooped seven digs and served up a pair of aces.

Sophomore Omarf Ortega-Reyes added 10 kills and eight digs for the Rangers while freshman Ephraim Smith totaled nine kills and 10 digs. Sophomore David Hoyt registered 33 assists and nine digs while freshman Bryan Do notched 15 digs.

Josiah Melendez posted 12 kills for the Knights.

Drew trailed 3-2 early in the opening set before taking control with a 10-1 run.

The Rangers led 16-10 midway through the second set, only to see Neumann rally with a 4-1 run to pull to within three. The Knights whittled the deficit all the way down to one (23-22) after a late 3-0 spurt, but Drew won the next two points on a pair of Neumann attack errors.

The Knights came out strong in the final set and led 9-6. But the Rangers rallied to take the lead with a 6-2 run and gradually pulled away.

Drew plays its final road match of the season on Saturday, when it visits Kean University at 3:30 p.m.
