BETHLEHEM, Pa. - With the game tied 5-5 at halftime, the Drew University men's lacrosse team outscored Moravian University 6-3 in the second half to give them a hard-fought 11-8 victory in their Landmark Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
Seven different Rangers scored as Drew earned its first win over Moravian since 2017 while improving to 6-3 on the year. The Greyhounds dropped to 3-3.
Breakout freshman
Mike DeMayo led the Ranger offense on Saturday, posting four goals and two assists to go with five ground balls. Three of his goals and both of his assists came in Drew's pivotal second half, including a goal and an assist within 50 seconds of each other toward the end of the third period.
The goal came at 3:59 when, with a man advantage, he worked around a Moravian defender to get right in front of the net and lifted one right over the leaping goalie to give Drew an 8-6 lead. Less than a minute later, he picked up a ground ball at around midfield off a Moravian turnover and fed it right to wide-open junior
Craig Wilkie (two goals, one assist), who fired a line drive right past the goalkeeper to make it a 9-6 game. The two sides traded goals twice in the fourth quarter.
This is DeMayo's fourth game of the season scoring at least four goals, as well as his fourth with at least six points.
Senior defenseman
Jack Tynan also turned in a big day, posting four caused turnovers while recording his first goal of the season. At the 8:19 mark in the first quarter, Tynan ran the ball almost the entire length of the field before launching one though traffic and just past the outstretched goalkeeper to open up the scoring on the day.
Sophomore long-stick midfielder
David Burke added eight ground balls for the Rangers while senior
Jeremy Gottlieb earned his sixth win of the season with a nine-save performance.
The Rangers will return home to host Elizabethtown College next Saturday at 1 p.m. in another Landmark Conference tilt.
