Big Second Half Powers Men's Lax Versus FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's lacrosse team outscored FDU-Florham 7-2 in the second half, breaking up a close game to come away with a convincing 15-9 victory over its local rival Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

The Rangers (4-1) are now off to their best start through five games since the 2012 squad opened at 5-0.

Junior Craig Wilkie, fresh off his second appearance of the season on the USILA Team of the Week, turned in another big performance for Drew, pumping in four goals and handing out two assists. He exploded for three goals and one helper in the team's big second half alone.

Freshman Mike DeMayo tossed in three goals for the Rangers while sophomore Brett Spafford contributed two goals and one assist. Senior Jeremy Gottlieb made a season-high 16 saves for Drew while sophomore GJ Nazziola finished 16-for-24 on face-offs to go with eight ground balls. Sophomore David Burke and junior Branden Walsh contributed with five and four ground balls, respectively.

Zane Johnston led the Devils (0-2) with four goals and three assists.

The Rangers trailed just once on the day - when FDU scored the opening goal 3:17 into the game. Drew came back with a 5-1 run to open up a 6-2 lead with 12:26 left in the opening half following a goal from freshman Trevor Spinelli.

The Devils responded with a big run of their own, outscoring the Rangers 5-1 over the final 9:23 of the second quarter to make it a 7-7 game. But Drew entered halftime on some momentum after freshman Brian Windisch scored with 27 seconds left, kicking off Drew's decisive run and making it 8-7 at the break.

Eight different Rangers accounted for Drew's eight first-half goals.

The two sides traded goals to open the second half before the Rangers erupted for a 6-0 run that spanned 11:53. Wilkie scored his final three goals during the spurt, which was capped by a DeMayo tally with 11:19 left. The Devils scored the game's final goal with 7:42 remaining.

Drew's man-down unit held FDU scoreless on the Devils' seven power plays.

The Rangers continue their season on Wednesday, when they visit Immaculata at 7 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
